So how would three former "islanders," who shiver like wet chickens in 30F weather, fare in a skating rink? In a word - terrible. You have to give it to us though for trying. Having six-year-olds doing effortless double axels around you while you're glued to the railing is truly a humbling experience. Even Re'Sean looked like a pro at first try.
On President's Day, my friends and I decided to test our balancing skills (or lack thereof) at a skating rink in Pentagon City. We looked pathetic compared to our very young competitors, but we had fun nonetheless. Rose, Badet and I managed to circle the rink maybe four times, making tentative gliding (and I'm using this word liberally here) movements. Considering that I was still recovering from a recent knee injury, I didn't want to suffer another bad fall. We saved ourselves from the embarassment of using buckets for balance. We could only take so much shame.
There's something to be said about kids and their boldness to try anything fun even at the risk of getting cuts and bruises in the end. When you hit the big 30, however, that sense of adventure is tempered by thoughts of torn ligaments. While our skating experience was not eactly a showcase of Filipino grace, we proved that even ice klutzes like us can still have fun. Thank you, Badet, for the pictures!
